I have to admit…I am not very good at balancing. Riding a skateboard? I’d fall off within the first few seconds of standing. Surfing? Yup, by the time I manage to stand up, I’d fall off. So at first I was feeling a bit nervous about my Segway tour in Kuala Lumpur, because I thought to myself…. what if I just can’t figure out how to balance on it? What if I fall off? All these thoughts went into my head.
Hubby and I arrived to the Lake Gardens and met Nickki, our tour guide from Guided Eco Ride at Lake Gardens. When I first hoped on the Segway, I was nervous, and I expressed my concern to Nickki. He was so patient with me, and said, “don’t worry, just trust that the machine will help you keep balance.” That was the key to riding the Segway – lean slightly forward and trust the machine to keep you balanced.
As soon as I trusted, I was zooming along and having so much fun with it.

The Experience
I have explored the Lake Gardens so many times, but only by foot. This time I got to see it from a whole new perspective, and it made me love exploring this part of Kuala Lumpur even more.
The Lake Gardens is such a big area, spanning 200 acres of greenery in the middle of the city. So to explore it by foot will take quite a bit of time, even though it is a lovely walk, and great way to keep fit during your travels.
Touring the Lake Gardens on a Segway is the most fun way to explore. Altogether, the tour took around 2.5 hours and covered approximately 10 kilometres. Nickki and his team picked up all the guests from their hotel, and we met him at the Kia Klemenz Boutique at the entrance to the Botanical Garden.

Along the way, there were plenty of photo and filming opportunities, so we were never short of time to explore and take in the sites.
The Segway
The segways that I have seen in the past were much bigger and heavier. For this tour with Guided Eco Ride at Lake Gardens, we rode on ‘InMotion machines’. The InMotion machines are smaller and lighter than the more traditional Segway models, which makes it much easier to zoom around. I found it simple to manoeuvre, and did not have any trouble doing turns or spins.

I was initially a bit hesitant about the uphill and downhill rides, but the Segway handled it well. I was able to easily control the machine while going downhill, and I found it easily managed to drive uphill without too much force. Also, whenever the machine goes downhill, the kinetic energy it produces turns into electrical energy, which helps to recharge the battery.
Best of all, the InMotion machine is emission-free, which makes it an eco-friendly way to explore the Lake Gardens.

Highlights of the Tour
There are so many different sites to visit in the Lake Gardens, and we managed to cover quite a lot of ground. We visited the Hibiscus Garden, the Orchid Garden, the Deer Park, the Lake area, Herb Garden…just to name a few highlights.

We made plenty of stops to take photos and videos, and were also given time to explore the different areas. I really enjoyed seeing the different flora and fauna, and managed to grab myself some great shots during the tour.

I also found it super easy to get around the gardens on the Segway. For the most part the paths were well maintained so there wasn’t too much manoeuvring around holes or bumps.
The Verdict
This is probably one of the most fun things I have done in Kuala Lumpur. I really enjoyed exploring Kuala Lumpur on a Segway, and highly recommend you try it too.
The tour is RM177 (A$58 | U$45) per person, and includes a minimum of 2 hours’ tour of the Lake Gardens, English & Chinese speaking guide, and a pick up/drop off service to your hotel.
If you are looking at exploring a different part of KL on a Segway, Nickki and his fabulous team offer a Segway Tour in Putrajaya.

To prepare yourself for the tour, wear comfortable clothing and shoes, bring along a lightweight carry bag with a bottle of water inside, and wear enough sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun.

Oh my goodness, this DOES look fun! I tried a Segway once in Qingdao, and it….. almost ended badly because I freaked out and almost ran into a child 🙁 But hey, adventures right? I haven’t been to Lake Gardens in 30 years and it looks gorgeous! I’m going to have to just try it for myself when I’m back there next year!
I really love this! Hopefully, I can do this too in KL!
Ah this looks like so much fun! Ive always wanted to try a segway, i dont think id be too good though! haha The surroundings look beautiful too!
I have never ridden a segway but I’ve always thought it was a great way to cover a lot of ground for just something like this.
So cute! I wouldn’t trust myself in one, did you feel like you were going to fall over!? Of all places I would try one, a garden would be it though, and I think my husband would enjoy a garden more riding along too.
Looks like you had a great time! I have seen these types of tours before and I always thought I wonder If i could actually do it! Glad to see it wasn’t too difficult! Also the gardens look absolutely stunning!
