Tropical luxury at the Mövenpick Resort Karon Beach

It’s mid-morning on the island, and I’m making my way down south to Karon Beach. The drive is breathtaking, a windy road that wraps along the edge of the island, showcasing stunning sea views around every bend.

We’re greeted at the Mövenpick Resort Karon Beach by a young man, fresh flower garlands in hand, who welcomes us with a friendly “SawadeeKrap” (‘Hello’ in Thai).

Sense that? Oh yes, that feeling of a being on holiday has begun.

We refresh ourselves with a cold towel and rosella juice before checking in. “Welcome Home,” the front desk clerk says.

I can’t get the smile off my face; it’s like being welcomed back after a long trip away.

The Facilities

The grounds themselves are a stunning example of well-maintained tropical garden that act as a backdrop to every aspect of the resort. In fact, the Mövenpick Resort Karon Beach is recognised for its collaboration with Green Globe to implement environmental sustainable practices throughout the resort.

I also enjoyed walking through the gardens in the evening

Wi-Fi connection is available to all guests and is strong throughout the resort. As a Digital Nomad myself, I still have to get work done when I travel and the wi-fi did not let me down. Want to work by the pool? No problem. In the middle of the garden? You can do that too, cocktail in hand.

Eating & Drinking

There’s an extensive list of dining and drinking options to choose from – 7 in total.

Don’t know where to start? Here’s my personal take on some of them.

Mint is located in Karon Square, just across from the beach. It’s the perfect setting to enjoy happy hour cocktails, while watching the sun turn the Andaman a burnt orange. The atmosphere is chilled and relaxed, the music loungy.

El Gaucho | Movenpick Resort Karon Beach | Hello Raya
The El Gaucho restaurant – I highly recommend trying the Brazilian BBQ

El Gaucho is also at Karon Square, just upstairs from Mint. It’s a fantastic steak house, also dishing up delicious traditional style Brazilian BBQ. This is a must try and the servings are super generous. From lamb to beef to chicken, it will be delivered to your table by the chef every fifteen minutes.

My favourite part? The barbecued cinnamon pineapple.  I’ll be stealing that recipe to make at home!

Breakfast at Pacifica Restaurant. As a villa guest, you also have the option to have breakfast at El Gaucho.

Breakfast is offered in the Pacifica Restaurant until 10:30am each day and offers a large selection of breakfast fare and meets most dietary requirements. If you’re lucky to be in a villa, you have the option to start the morning at El Gaucho.

Cafe Studio | Movenpick Resort Karon Beach | Hello Raya
Coffee & a pastry at Cafe Studio

Café Studio (Karon Square) is more casual and designed for a quick sandwich or coffee refuelling pit stop. Do yourself a favour and try the famous Mövenpick ice cream while you’re here. My money’s on the double cream with meringue – if there’s any left… (yup, that’s how good it is!).

The Spa

You’re on holiday, so sloth-like relaxation is compulsory. ‘The Spa’ at the Mövenpick Resort Karon Beach is exquisite and a must do to add to your itinerary. The Spa is open till late, meaning you can tour the island during the day, and recover at the spa after the sun goes down. Having spent several occasions here, I can honestly say The Spa at the Mövenpick Resort Karon Beach is on my all times favourites list.

The building is nestled in the tropical gardens with the only noise coming from soft background music and a gentle bubbling fountain. A light scent from essential oils, relaxes you from the moment you walk in.

There are 8 treatment rooms in total, all spacious and beautiful decorated in traditional Thai style. Each treatment room has its own bathroom, safety deposit box and a small closet.

After trying numerous treatments in the past, I recommend the following options:

–           Oriental Body Glow Scrub

–           Traditional Thai Massage

–           Sabai Stone Therapy

–           Any of the Qi Shiseido Facials

Traditional Thai Massage

Experience a traditional Thai Massage at the Spa

“When in Thailand” leaving without a traditional Thai massage is a crime against relaxation. It’s one of my favourite massage styles because it also includes yoga-like stretching as a bonus. By the end of a traditional Thai massage, I feel rebalanced and released of all tension.

Before the massage began, I change into a cotton pyjama style outfit – it was like wearing a cloud. No oil is used during the massage, but rather the therapist uses her hands, elbows and feet to massage and stretch out all your worldly worries. The Thai massage was worth every minute, I felt so relaxed by the end of the session –   the perfect way to start a morning at the spa.

Shiseido Qi Sensitive Skin Treatment (facial)

The products used during the facial

After my Thai massage, the therapist starts a 60-minute facial – the best pick me up treatment for fatigued skin. The therapist was systematic and gentle throughout. There’s no piercing of the skin, like other facials but rather the focus is on using top quality products to detoxify the skin on the face and alleviate that tired look nobody wants. This was followed by my favourite part – a long and luxurious facial massage. By the end of the treatment, my skin felt so clean and refreshed; I was like a new person.

The hotel boasts three separate pools, so the hardest decision is which one to park yourself next to. The main pool, located near the lobby, is most popular as it’s available to all guests. It’s a good size and includes a swim up pool bar. Did someone say Pina Colada?

Coconut Grove Pool | Movenpick Resort Karon Beach | Hello Raya
I could have spent all day in the Coconut Grove pool

The Coconut Grove Pool is set among the villas and is only available for villa guests. This makes the pool quieter and mostly free from kids. I spent most of my time here and it’s my pick for lazy dips and lounge chair reading. But if two pools weren’t enough, there is also a third the Saeng Chan pool, available to guests.

Karon beach is something straight out of a magazine; 5 kilometres of white sand and turquoise water. It’s the less know and less hectic cousin of Patong Beach. I much prefer staying in Karon Beach; it’s quieter and less populated than its Patong neighbour. Don’t immediately think it will be snoresville though, there’s plenty of restaurants, cafes and shops.

The Mint Bar is the perfect spot to enjoy happy hour cocktails and watch the sunset at Karon Beach

The beach is literally across the road from the Mövenpick Resort Karon Beach, making it extremely convenient if you’re looking for the quintessential beach holiday. In fact, there are hardly any hotels located right on the sand in Phuket due to local building regulations so you’re getting up close and personal where many tourists can’t.

The Verdict

If a tropical beach holiday is what you’re seeking, the Mövenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach delivers. It’s a fantastic 5-star resort, showcasing world renowned Thai hospitality at its finest and offering a wide range of facilities, dining and drinking options.

Rooms start at around A$160 for a Superior Room but I urge you to splash a little cash on a villa. Villas start at A$230, and gives you exclusive access to the Coconut Grove Pool and the option to have breakfast at El Gaucho. Trust me, it’s worth your while.

Consider the Mövenpick Resort Karon Beach for your next island getaway; it’s sure to turn a few colleagues green with envy at the water cooler when you return.

29 Comments on Tropical Luxury at the Mövenpick Resort Karon Beach (Phuket)

  1. This looks so luxurious and relaxing. You had me at the bathtub, and then even more so at the pool! I’d probably do nothing but drink cocktails and eat icecream in the tub all day.

  2. This solace sounds absolutely amazing. And so affordable compared to European options. You get a complete getaway and don’t have to leave with all the dining and activity choices. Thanks for this recommendation!

  3. That is definitely top notch luxury. I would not feel like ever leaving this resort. SPA, facial, beach, pools, so many options for food to choose from, a gorgeous beach. But my personal favourite , the personal plunge pool. Will keep this in mind.

  4. Phuket is one of my dream locations to visit! This resort looks amazing and just my style. I’m pretty certain I would spend quite a bit of time at the spa, the pool and try a bit of all the food I could manage.

  5. I really loved your quote, ” leaving without a traditional Thai massage is a crime against relaxation.” It was really charming and I couldn’t agree more. I would love a Thai massage right now because I’m a bit stressed. The traditional decorating looks super relaxing and the facials there sound very professional. I would love a facial there because the therapists seem so professional and knowledgeable!

  6. Oh my my! I have traveled in Northern Thailand but recently I’ve really wanted to go back and explore the southern side. This looks amazing for the price. I’ll pin this to my Thailand board!

  7. I almost splashed out on the Movenpick in Bangkok when I was there last year because they had a great opening promotion – if it’s anything like this one in Phuket, I’m regretting it big time! That bathroom is to die for! And the pools… how many are there at the resort?!

    • The Movenpick group have some great hotels all over the world. I recommend checking some of them out along your travels. I’ve been to a few of them around Jordan and Egypt as well – to die for! The resort in Karon Beach is no exception – it is stunning and worth staying at when in Phuket.

  8. This looks Amazing. I have a feeling that this place doesn’t break the bank either. Everything in Thailand is not very expensive for what you get. This looks like a place I need to check out. Super jealous that you got to stay here.

  9. Great write-up Soraya! It makes me smile and in actual fact I was part of the takeover taskforce (many years ago!), when this fantastic resort joint the Moevenpick group.
