And You need a password to get in.

The entrance was less than obvious. If you walked by it, you wouldn’t even know that a speakeasy lay behind.

We plugged in the passcode into the door and it unlocked. I got goosebumps. The view up was eery – a long staircase up with ghostly sounds from the Ghost Bride Prelude. As we walk ourselves up the stairs, I thought that at any moment someone might just jump out to scare us…you know like in haunting houses.

Along the way up, an alter and light bulbs wrapped with Taoist Talisman…ohhh what an eery feeling.

But we continued our way up to the top…my heart pounding a little bit faster. The ghostly sounds of the Ghost Bride Prelude was starting to get a little creepy.

Welcome to the Deceased Bar KL

The Deceased Bar used to be an old Chinese drugstore. The whole backdrop of the bar area is made up of Chinese medicine cabinets, which resembles its historic past. Instead of medicinal herbs, the bartenders store their tools to help them create crafty cocktails for us.

The Cocktail Menu

The cocktail menu does change, keeping things all the more exciting. But they all do play along with the concept of death, and I have to say, they do look and taste terrifyingly amazing. And I like that the menu is ever-evolving, because it’ll encourage KL residents to come back.

You’ll definitely get drama while you’re here, with masks, incense sticks, half Barbie bodies, wooden ancient slippers, a popping balloon all making their way to the overall look and feel of the cocktails.

While all these props do play a gimmick creating for interesting Instagram stories, there is a thought and story behind each and every cocktail brought to the table. And that’s what we appreciated – while the bartenders put every effort and care into making each cocktail, they will also personally deliver the drinks to your table and explain the concept behind the cocktail.

The ingredients are diverse with oriental influences including rice wine, red dates, kumquat, and oolong tea. And best of all, the cocktails are relatively affordable, starting at approximately RM35 (U$9 | A$11).

And fear not – if cocktails are not your thing, there is also a selection of beer in the menu.

The Space

The space is a lot bigger than just the inside bar area. It spreads to the outside rooftop area of the Mingle hostel, so there is plenty of space to sit around. It’s a great atmosphere, with a mix of house music and rap playing in the background.

But we liked sitting inside because it’s always fun to watch the bartenders hard at work! And I must say, they did not disappoint. When we ordered our drinks, the bartenders made every effort to ensure all drinks arrived at the same time, which is not so common in KL (believe it or not).

The Verdict

The Deceased Bar KL is a gem find in the heart of Chinatown. While there are a number of speakeasy bars in Kuala Lumpur to choose from, this is one to add to your list.

To book, you have to send them a message via their Facebook page, where they will then share a passcode with you to get in. But don’t get put off if they don’t message you back straight away – that’s part of the thrill of this speakeasy. With the passcode changing daily, you may only find it out closer to opening time. The bar is open daily from 6pm to 2am. There is a limited number of reservations per day, so get booking!

9 Comments on The Deceased Bar: A Deathly Speakeasy Bar in Kuala Lumpur

  1. What an innovative yet morbid concept! I’m sure the Deceased Bar is very popular on Halloween! The drinks look very inventive and it seems like a great place to hang out in Kuala Lumpur. I won’t forget this bar anytime soon!

  2. What an interesting and unique concept for a speakeasy bar! The drinks sound amazing and the inside of the bar looks really cool, however, I think I may have just turned around and run the other way as soon as I saw all the bloody handprints on the walls of the hallway! Yikes!

  3. This is such a quirky, interesting, fun place! I love the concept of speakeasy. I went to one of these bars in Mexico city, it was hidden behing a refrigerator door and I had the time of my life. The dool concept in this place is slightly creepy, yet amazing! Would love to visit one day!

  4. Thankyou for letting us know about such interesting place.s I got goosebumps while reading this in the night in dark room esp when I saw the stairs lol. But later on I feel it was much like a cool bar with loads of drinking option. I am definitely checking this out in my visit to KL next.

  5. How fun! A real speakeasy except instead of a door guy, you put in the code. This looks a bit creepy but still sounds like so much fun. The cocktails sound delicious and the fun of waiting for your code to arrive so that you can join in the fun, just adds to the excitement.

  6. Oh my gosh this looks so freaky I’m not sure if I’d have the nerve to go inside ha ha! I guess it adds to the mystery and atmosphere. That’s quite cool you have to get a coded password texted to you! The bar staff must be very skilled at coming up with their different cocktails. I’m sure my husband would love to visit this – he’s a sucker for anything creepy like this!

  7. That sounds so so cool, especially the fact that you need a password to enter, there’s deathly music playing, the staircase is so eerie and the entrance almost doesn’t exist! I love those cocktails and it is interesting to know that they;re not just for a good photo but there’s a thought that goes behind each of them. Totally my kind of place!

  8. You had me at your opening sentence, “If you’re superstitious, this might scare you. But if you’re after a thrill, then meet The Deceased Bar, a speakeasy bar in Kuala Lumpur which is inspired by the darker side of life…think ‘death,’ ‘superstition,’ ‘sorcery.’” I have been to few quirky bars in South East Asia where you have to win over your fear but i have never even heard about this bar before. I am surely going to try thsi one next time in KL.

  9. This place looks so cool! I don’t even drink (and I’m pretty sure I don’t know what a speakeasy is) but I’d go out of my way just to visit here. Do you know if they do any mocktails or other non-alcoholic drinks?
