The town of Luang Prabang is an ancient town located in the north of Laos that is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a gorgeous town that beautifully interweaves Lao traditions while preserving European style architecture.
Now imagine being able to stay in the former Governor’s residence in Luang Prabang. Well the Sofitel Luang Prabang offers exactly that.
This beautiful resort is built on a UNESCO-protected heritage site, where they have beautifully restored the former Governor’s residence. The Sofitel Luang Prabang offers all the glam of a 5-star resort, while also maintaining a traditional French-Laotian heritage.

In 2010 the site was transformed into a hotel, originally known as the Hotel de la Paix. Then in 2015, the property was fully restored and re-opened its doors to the public as the Sofitel Luang Prabang. It was then that the hotel become one of the oldest hotels in the Sofitel group.
Being a short 15-20 minutes walk from the city centre allows this resort to have large well-manicured gardens, and also the largest swimming pool in town. This makes the Sofitel Luang Prabang the perfect oasis after a full day of touring.

The Experience
This resort has 25 all suite rooms – that’s right, they are all suites and at minimum all come with your own private garden, a spacious room with a sitting area and large bathroom. All of the rooms are nicely spread around the resort to maintain maximum privacy, especially if you decide to indulge in your own private outdoor bath tub (or better your private pool!).

Upon arriving to the Sofitel, we were warmly welcomed by their staff who offered us a welcome drink and cool towel. A perfect welcome! I particularly remember Pookie, who for the days that I stayed at the hotel always remembered our names. She continuously had a big smile and was so helpful.

The Garden Suite
I stayed in the Garden Suite, which was a spacious room and included my own private garden and an outdoor bath tub. And if one bath tub is not enough, don’t worry, there is another one in the room…in addition to a separate shower area.
The room itself was extremely comfortable. It was fitted out with all the modern features, with a touch of traditional Laotian heritage such as Laotian silk and artifacts that decorated the room.

My favorite part of the room – the bed. It was a king bed and it was divinely comfortable; like floating on top of a cloud. Or as some on my trip would say, like sleeping on a marshmallow.
There was a large sitting area, enough to fit 4-5 people and a large flat screen TV on the wall. On its side table, there was a bowl full of fresh fruit, which would be replenished each day. Plus an iPod stereo with an iPod filled with music handpicked by the team at the Sofitel Luang Prabang.
The mini bar was nicely stoked, and came with free coffee and tea making facilities. The best part – the tea and coffee was not your stock standard selection, but rather included fresh local Laotian coffee and loose leaf tea.
Facilities & Activities
There are various facilities at the resort to ensure a comfortable stay for all guests.
Each morning breakfast buffet was included and we would enjoy it at the Governor’s Grill. A fantastic selection of dishes to ensure every dietary requirement would be met. Plus fresh juices! I highly recommend trying the detox juice, which was delicious and a great way to start the day. Also, each day at 4pm you can enjoy a lovely afternoon tea here.
The resort also has the largest pool in town – a 25-meter amethyst tiled pool. A perfect way to cool down, especially after a full day of touring.

And finally, no relaxing holiday would be complete without a trip to the spa. Le Spa offers a wide range of body treatments to suit every visitor. Their treatments are inspired by ancient Lao healing techniques and use local organic products. It is the perfect way to relax and rejuvenate.
