If you are a foodie and/or wine connoisseur, and you are in Phuket, then the award-winning Boathouse Phuket needs to be on your list of places to eat.
Conveniently located right on Kata Beach, the Boathouse Wine & Grill is a charming nautical themed restaurant, serving up French and Thai dishes. The Boathouse Phuket is famously known on the island for having one of the most impressive wine cellar with over 600 (has even reached 800 at one point) labels available.
Having won Wine Spectator Best Award of Excellence since 2006 (two glasses), it is no wonder that I am going to say – the food was divine and the wine choices was impressive.
Hubby and I had the pleasure of dining here with the Boathouse Phuket’s General Manager, Max Chin. Max was formally an Executive Chef and Culinary Director for several 5-star International Hotels around Asia, and also operated his own gourmet restaurant in Kuala Lumpur. He is now the leader behind the wonderful culinary experience at the Boathouse, where he works hard to ensure all guests have the best experience possible. Plus, he is also a bit of a wine connoisseur, so was able to give us some great insight into the Boathouse’s extensive wine selection.
The Space & Seating
The setup of the restaurant is perfect for the beach town resort of Phuket. It is stylish and elegant with a mix of a nautical beachside theme.
The restaurant is set right on the beach front, which means excellent views of Kata Beach. The Boathouse Phuket is especially perfect during the sunset, especially with one of their handcrafted cocktails in hand.
You can choose to either sit outside in a more alfresco dining setting or sit inside in their open-air dining setting. Either way, you’ll get fantastic views of the ocean. My favorite spot in the restaurant – the large window overlooking the kitchen, because I love to see the chefs at work. But I like to sit outside where you’ll get a calm seabreeze and can hear the gentle waves off Kata beach.
Upon entering the restaurant from the main lobby, you’ll see the wine cellar to your right. I was sneaky and asked if I could go in to see it, and they agreed. So I got a tour of the cellar. It was such a cool experience and it is no wonder the restaurant is famed for its wine cellar.
The restaurant is easily accessible on the street side and beach side, so there are no excuses not to visit and experience the wonderful Boathouse Wine & Grill.
The Experience
Hubby and I got to experience one of the Boathouse’s ‘Wine Dinners’ during our visit. On this particular evening, wines from the Italian winery “Tenuta Sette Ponti” were on feature and they were all perfectly paired with a 5-course degustation menu. The food was wonderful and the portions were generous.
To start the evening off, the Boathouse Phuket offered sparkling wine, that was complimented with canapes. My favorite was the Gazpacho soup (a cold vegetable soup) – it was delicious and refreshing. After the canapes, the degustation dinner began and on the menu for the evening:
- Seared Sea Scallops with Potato Cream
- Open Ravili with meat, Portobello mushroom and basil oil
- Smoked Duck Breast with Cannelini Bean Ragout and Thyme Jus
- Mignon of Beef Tenderloin on Wagyu Beef Cheek with Truffle Sauce
- Warm Italian Cheese Flan with Glazed Walnut & Parmesan Crackers

My favorite dishes were the Sea Scallops and Beef Tenderloin – both cooked to perfection with a perfect balance of flavours. The Sea Scallops were cooked nicely, which meant it was not dry and the potato cream added a great touch. The beef tenderloin was so tender, it was practically melting in my mouth and the beef cheek came cooked in a lovely sauce.
The dinner was nicely accompanied by live music – a lovely female singer, paired with a great pianist. It created a wonderful atmosphere in the restaurant and a nice way to enjoy our gourmet meals.
The service was excellent – all the staff were professional, polite and attentive. All the servers have been properly trained not only to provide top notch service, but also to help you select the right wines to pair with your meals.
My Dad has also dined at the Boathouse Phuket previously and highly recommended some of the seafood dishes, such as the Lobster Ravioli in Lobster Bisque.

Ooh this place looks amazing! Definitely one for the bucket list!
It was a great experience! Definitely worth visiting
It looks so delicious! and such a nice venue… I hope to go to Phuket soon, so hopefully checking it out myself in a couple of months 🙂
Oooh yes you have to! It’s a great spot for a nice dinner and drinks.
It looks like such a lovely time. That ravioli looks so yummy!
It was fantastic! Such a great dinner
I experienced exactly none of the glitz and glamour you did while in Phuket! I think I was a complete and total hippie the whole time. It would have been so lovely to have gone to a wine dinner while there. I know Harry would have been all for it after 3 months without any proper wine. Amazing food shots too – I’m hungry!
